He incorporates his visual sense in his ability to spin compelling yarns. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. A neo-gothic novella of growing suspense and horror, with 26 beautiful interior illustrations. She learned to find beauty in her newfound art, forming masques to make the dead resemble the living. Kate brazenly used her kerchief to wiped away the concealing powders and stand before them, birthmark revealed and prominent. She knew what she had to do when asked what skills she possessed that qualified her for the position. Desperate, she answered an advertisement for a mortuary assistant, applying makeup to cadavers. When tragedy upended her modest life and dumped her out onto the streets, she was bereft of options. Out of necessity, she became adept at hiding inside her home and behind makeups she formulated and applied herself. Love was something for which she yearned, but never found within her reach. In 1880s London, that was enough to discourage suitors. Katherine O’Donnell was born with a disfiguring strawberry birthmark across the bottom of her face.

7/6/2023 0 Comments Backstage by Joan I. WendlandBalanchine fell crazy in love, probably the more so because she had been Massine’s before. All around the apartment she came to share with him, she installed photographs of Massine. But she seems never to have forgotten Massine, and she did not hide this fact from Balanchine. Soon after that, she switched to Balanchine, and the two were married in December 1938. Zorina did and finally she slit her wrists in a Florida hotel where the company was staying. Massine reportedly didn’t mind this arrangement. Eventually, he met his destiny in the form of a different woman, an extremely beautiful nineteen-year-old German-Norwegian, Vera Zorina, who at that time was just coming off an affair with Léonide Massine, the only man Balanchine seems to have regarded as a serious rival (for jobs as well as women) and whom he consequently hated.Įach day, as Massine crossed the country on tour with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (he was its ballet master), he would set a timer: so-and-so minutes with his wife, so-and-so minutes with Zorina. Is it possible to get pregnant four or five times in a single year? Maybe so, because Howard’s mother threatened to have Balanchine deported. 1 His first American girlfriend, Holly Howard, apparently had four or five abortions in their first year together. George Balanchine, the great choreographer and cofounder of New York City Ballet, who arrived in the United States in 1933, almost always had a girlfriend-often a few. White men seem to have difficulty in realizing that people who live differently from themselves still might be traveling the upward and progressive road of life.Īfter nearly four hundred years' living upon this continent, it is still popular conception, on the part of the Caucasian mind, to regard the native American as a savage, meaning that he is low in thought and feeling, and cruel in acts that he is a heathen, meaning that he is incapable, therefore void, of high philosophical thought concerning life and life's relations. There are reasons why men live as they do, think as they do, and practice as they do hence, there were forces that made the Lakota the man he was. "In this book I attempt to tell my readers just how we lived as Lakotans-our customs, manners, experiences, and traditions-the things that make all men what they are. Standing Bear fought to preserve Lakota heritage and sovereignty he was at the forefront of a Progressive movement to change government policy toward Native Americans. Luther Standing Bear was a Sicangu and Oglala Lakota chief notable in history as a Native American author, educator, philosopher, and actor of the twentieth century. Land of the Spotted Eagle is an ethnographic description of traditional Lakota life and customs, criticizing whites' efforts to "make over" the Indian into the likeness of the white race. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Pryor convictions“So how do you want to end up? Have you thought about that? Do you want a career you’re proud of? Or do you want to end up a spitting wad like Jerry Lewis?” At a party one night, Marx gave Pryor a talking-to. ‘You sound just like Bill Cosby.’”īut while Rickles may have been amused, Groucho Marx was not. “Don Rickles came backstage and praised my act,” he remembered. Modeling even his speaking patterns after Cosby, Pryor was soon called out by a few comedic legends. “My routine included harmless spoofs of life in the ghetto,” he writes, “such as when I pretended to be a doofus saying, ‘I heard a knock on the door.’ I said to my wife, ‘There’s a knock on the door.’ And my wife said, ‘That’s peculiar. In 1966, Pryor’s career was boosted when crooner Bobby Darin signed him as the opening act for his show at the Flamingo in Vegas. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Wake anna hope reviewPost-war Britain is realistically rendered without making the historical detail seem forced. Well-researched, tender, and emotionally charged, Hope’s prose is natural and the plot intriguing, making Wake an outstanding read. The symbolism of burying an unidentified soldier gives them all an opportunity to assuage the grief of their own losses. Short, italicised passages also give the perspective of a number of anonymous characters who bear witness to the journey of the remains from a French trench to the final resting place. But the soldiers of World War I feature prominently as their dead or broken sons, lovers and brothers, who are treated compassionately by the author, in spite of the deplorable roles they may have been compelled to play in the theatre of war. The main characters of the novel are Ada, Evelyn and Hettie. This is one of those books that tells us more about the period it was written in than anything else, so it's important to note that it was first published in 1961 and later again in 1968 - when moon fever was running high and people seemed to have high expectations for human achievement.Įvents are set in an undisclosed future but the older characters seem to remember the first moon landing, so I wouldn't be surprised if Heinlein was thinking of it being set around about now. It took me a long time to read only because of lack of time, and a rather annoying trait the author has that I'll go into later. Apparently a classic of the sci-fi cannon, I'd never heard of this book until it came up on a book club here. 7/5/2023 0 Comments She drives me crazy paperbackThe supporting characters are just as strongly written as the main characters, and have diverse and distinctive personalities, such as the sweet and caring Honey-Belle and serious and assertive Danielle. Although the constant back and forth banter can become tiring at some points, the author does a brilliant job of displaying the dynamics of each relationship between characters. Toxic relationships are a recurring theme, and the author skilfully shows Scottie’s healing process after breaking up with her manipulative ex-girlfriend. It pays tribute to iconic 80s movies Say Anything and Dirty Dancing, but the clearest influence is much loved rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, which receives a mention from the main character herself.ĭescribed by the author as “goofy, campy and ridiculous”, the book definitely delivers. While the book features popular tropes (such as fake dating and enemies to lovers) and predictable plot points, it still manages to be a fun and entertaining read. She Drives Me Crazy is a young adult queer romance novel that centres on Scottie Vajac and her arch-enemy, Iris Abraham, as they team up to make Scottie’s ex jealous. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Zero sum game novelAs you can imagine, this comes in handy for calculating the trajectory of bullets, giving the action sequences another layer of excitement.īut while the cool fight scenes are what draws you in, what keeps you there are the characters.
